All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen
Founded on 12 November 1927 in Hyderabad as the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen by Nawab Bahadur Yar Jung Nawab Mahmood Nawaz Khan Qiledar to represent Muslim political interests in the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad. The party was banned after the 1948 annexation of Hyderabad by India and was revived in 1958 by Abdul Wahed Owaisi as the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, adopting a more constitutionalist, India-focused stance. Leadership passed through the Owaisi family, with Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi and later his son Asaduddin Owaisi leading the party to expand beyond Hyderabad into Maharashtra, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan from the 1990s onward, positioning itself as a champion of Muslim minority rights and secularism. The party experienced a 1993 split when the Majlis Bachao Tehreek broke away. AIMIM has held the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat continuously since 1984 and has periodically allied with parties such as the UPA (2008-2012) and, in 2024, aligned informally with the Popular Front-linked PDM bloc in Uttar Pradesh.
