Asom Gana Parishad
The Asom Gana Parishad was founded on 14 October 1985 at a convention in Golaghat, emerging directly out of the leadership of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) that had spearheaded the 1979-85 Assam Movement demanding action against illegal foreign immigrants, which culminated in the Assam Accord of 1985. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta became the country's youngest-ever Chief Minister when the AGP swept the 1985 Assam Assembly elections. The party has since alternated in and out of power in Assam, splitting and reuniting several times, and has been a long-standing NDA/NEDA ally of the BJP since 2016.
